रोपे तयार करण्यासाठी ९८ कप्पे असलेला प्रो ट्रे वापरतात. ह्यात कोकोपीट भरुन बियाणे लागवड केली जाते. लागवड झाली की पाणी द्यावे. प्रतिहेक्टरी दिड ते दोन किलो बियाणे लागते. हे उबदार वातावरणातलं पिक असल्याने लागवड केलेले ८ ते १० ट्रे एकावर एक ठेउन काळ्या पॉलिथिन पेपर ने झाकून घ्यावे. अश्याने बियाणांना उब मिळते आणि बी लवकर उगायला मदत होते.
३ ते ४ दिवसांनी, जेव्हा रोपे उगवतात तेव्हा पॉलिथिन काढून टाकावे व ट्रे खाली जमिनीवर उतरवून ठेवावेत. रोपे सडू नयेत म्हणून पेरणीनंतर दहाव्या दिवशी कॉपर ऑक्झीक्लोराईड किंवा कॉपर हायड्रॉक्साईडची दोन ग्रॅम प्रति लिटर पाणी या प्रमाणात आळवणी करावी. तसेच नागअळी व रसशोषक किडींचा प्रादुर्भाव होऊ नये म्हणून संबंधित अळी चा प्रादुर्भाव रोखणाऱ्या किटकनाशकाची फवारणी तज्ञांच्या सल्ल्याने करावी.
ह्यानंतर १४ ते १६ दिवसांनी रोपांना फुटवा आला आहे ह्याची खात्री करुन पुनर्लागवड करावी. लागवड करतांना दोन ओळींमधले अंतर १.५ × १ मीटर अथवा १.५ × ५ मीटर अश्या अंतराने करावी.
जमिनीची उभी आडवी नांगरणी करुन ढेकळे फोडून घ्यावेत आणि मग वखारणी करावी. खरबुजाची लागवड आळे पध्दतीनं म्हणजे, ठरावीक अंतरावर आळे खणून त्यात मध्यभागी तिन ते चार बिया टोकावून ही केली जाते. तसेच सरी वरंबा पध्दतीत १.५ ×०.५ मीटरवर ३ ते ४ बिया टोकून ही केली जाते. तर गादी वाफ्यात लागवडीसाठी ७५ सें. मी रुंद व १५ सें.मी. उंच गादी वाफे तयार करुन घ्यावेत. लागवडीआधी ५०:५०:५० ह्या प्रमाणात नत्र स्फुरद आणि पालाश ची मात्रा द्यावी आणि लागवडीनंतर एका महिन्याने ५० किलो नत्राची मात्रा द्यावी.
जमिनीचा मगदुर ओळखून पाण्याचे व्यवस्थापन करावे. वेलींच्या वाढीच्या काळात ५ ते ७ दिवसांच्या अंतराने पाणी द्यावे नंतर फळ लागून फळ वाढीच्या काळात ८ ते १० दिवसांच्या अंतराने पाणी द्यावे.
वेल पुर्ण वाढीला लागली की आंतरमशागत करावी. आजुबाजूचे सर्व तण तेव्हा काढून घ्यावे आणि रान भुसभुशीत करावे. तण मोठे झाले असतील तर हाताने मुळासकट उपटून काढावे.
तसेच लागवडीआधी एकरी ५ टन शेणखत + ५० किलो डीएपी +५० किलो म्युरेट ऑफ पोटॅश + ५० किलो १०ः२६ः२६ + २०० किलो निंबोळी पेंड + १० किलो झिंक सल्फेट मिसळावे. दोन गादी वाफ्याच्या मधोमध लॅटरल येते. त्याचे अंतर ७ फुट असावे. लॅटरल वर मल्चिंग पेपर अंथरुन वाऱ्याने पेपर फाटू नये दोन्ही बाजुंनी पेपरवर माती टाकावी. ह्यानंतर दोन इंच पाईपच्या तुकड्याच्या सहाय्याने ड्रिपरच्या दोन्ही बाजूंनी १० सें. मी. अंतरावर छिद्रे पाडावीत. ड्रिपरच्या एकाच बाजुच्या छिद्रांमधील अंतर १.५ फुट ठेवावे. ह्याद्वारे पाणी सोडून गादी वाफे ओले करुन घ्यावे आणि मग त्यावर लागवड करावी.
रोप लावतांना रोपे व्यवस्थित दाबून, पेपरला चिकटणार नाही ह्याची काळजी घेऊन लावावे. जेणेकरून रोपंची मर होण्यापासून टाळता येईल. अश्या पध्दतीने एका एकरात सुमारे ७२५० रोपे लागतात.
बी पेरल्यानंतर तीन ते साडेतीन महीन्यांनी साधारणतः काढणीला सुरुवात होते आणि ती प्रक्रीया तिन ते चार आठवडे चालते. इतर पिकांसारखे केवळ आकार व रंगावरून फळ पिकल्याचे ह्या बाबतीत ठरवता येत नाही.
देठाजवळ लव अजिबात दिसले नाही की फळ पिकले असे समजतात. शिवाय हाताने फळावर दाब दिल्यास कर्रर्र असा आवाज आला की तेव्हा ही फळ पिकले असं समजतात.
खरबुजाचे अनुक्रमे हेक्टरी उत्पादन २५० ते ३०० क्विंटल आणि १०० ते १५० क्विंटल येते.
